History:

St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church was founded in 1831 and has celebrated over 175 years in the Barnwell community. The church, located on the corner of what is now Franklin and Madison streets, was dedicated on November 29, 1833 by Bishop John England.

During the 19th and the early 20th centuries, the parish flourish, however, by 1926 the church was closed due to the great decline in the number of Catholics in Barnwell. In 1944, Mass was again celebrated in the church on the last Sunday of the month. In 1950 new Catholic families moved to Barnwell to work at the Savannah River Site. The number of parishioners has varied with the fluctuations of business in the area. Currently the parish serves over 55 households.
